Overview

Poster creation is a union of layout, typography, and illustration and it is the designer's priority to convey key information to the viewer in a quick glance. The process of designing a poster involves patience, a sharp attention to detail, and lots of sketching. I personally love both creating posters, and the design thinking that is required to reach a successful final product! Scroll on to view some posters that I’ve designed for various clients, school, and personal projects.

Zoo Tunes Poster

The Challenge

Create a poster to promote the Woodland Park Zoo’s summer concert series. As one of the zoo’s key fundraising events, it’s important to maintain interest from the community. The design should be reflective of the family-friendly nature of the event, without feeling too childish.

The Solution

To speak to a wide audience I executed an illustration style that is playful and whimsical, and utilized a vivid color palette with texture and expressive type. Overall, the poster is eye-catching and conveys a family-friendly tone without feeling exclusive. Zoo Tunes is also a key funding event for the zoo, with proceeds going toward supporting education programs, conservation efforts (for both plants and animal species), and animal care. To emphasize this aspect of the event, the poster features layered botanicals and highlights animals whose populations are vulnerable on the endangered spectrum.

A Midsummer Night's Dream Poster

The Challenge

Develop a poster for Seattle Shakespeare’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that represents the themes and overall feel of the play.

The Solution

For this poster I sought to create visual interest by inviting the viewer into the world of the play through a tree branch portal that offers a peek into the magical yet foreboding forest where A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place. Through this idea, the viewer both steps into the shoes of the protagonists as they venture deeper into the woods, but also frames the viewer as a voyeur, aligning them with the mischievous fairies as they watch the chaos of the play unravel from a distance.

BOYGIRLBOY Gig Poster

The Challenge

Create a gig poster for the indie-pop band BOYGIRLBOY that represents the messaging and vibe of their music and will both gain attention from new potential audiences, and inspire loyal fans to purchase the poster and hang it in their home. Use only 3 colors.

The Solution

BOYGIRLBOY falls into the indie-pop genre with a very atmospheric sound that incorporates electronic elements. A majority of their lyrics point to ideas of the inevitability of life and change. In creating imagery, the skull is meant to  encapsulate the idea of life being ephemeral, while the flowers and lush growth around it convey the idea of rebirth and change. Overall the imagery takes something dark and presents it in a beautiful and whimsical way, which is representative of the content and sound of their music.
